Lead generation is always changing

So I told you in these other emails (first, second) how I knew my lead generation level would be higher forever.

But here was the problem:

I STILL HAD TO BUILD AND MANAGE THE LANDING PAGES.

Now don’t get me wrong…. I fully expect to always “have to do some work” for all my leads. But online advertising is always changing and it can be hard to keep up.

I know this all too well.

When I was 13 I sold a dirtbike I had owned for a few years. I saved up everything I had ever made to buy this dirtbike but unfortunately I had outgrown it

After I sold it I decided I wanted to spend the money I got from it on a laptop… I wanted to be a hacker.

I had seen way too many movies and T.V. shows and really thought that all hackers had like supercomputers with holographic screens and you could do anything you wanted.

So I bought the new hotness at the time, a Gateway laptop! (are they still a thing?)

I quickly learned that hacking is nothing like it looks on T.V. and I really wasn’t cut out for it.

At this point I didn’t know what else to do with this laptop. I felt like I just threw away $900 dollars. (remember I was 13 so that means I thought the was ending)

I decided I wanted to learn how to build websites. Keep in mind this was before you could take HTML classes in school or even find good HTML courses online.

So I got a program called dreamweaver to edit html and started downloading the code of websites I thought “looked cool.”

I taught myself HTML the absolute most basic and time consuming way possible. I would spend hundreds of hours on my laptop changing one line of code and seeing how it changed the website in my editor.

It was like trying to learn another language but instead of holding up a spoon and someone telling you the word for “spoon” in the new language, they threw you into a kitchen and gave you a card with a word for every item in the kitchen. Then when you would match an item with the right card, a light would turn on to show it was a match.

I figured out enough to get by and to this day I won’t claim that I “know” HTML or any other real programming languages. (Although somehow I do have a degree in web design…)

Anyways I was really into gas powered remote controlled cars at the time so I built a website about them!

I got a decent amount of traffic and thought I should try making some money off of it using ads.

I put something called “display ads” on my website.

At the time these were the most effective online advertising around.

Advertisers got a great return on investment for display ads compared to text ads, which means they paid publishers better!

  2. Only 8% of internet users account for 85% of clicks on display ads (and some of them aren’t even humans!).

  4. The average person is served over 1,700 banner ads per month. Do you remember any?
  5. You are more likely to summit Mount Everest than click a banner ad.
  6. The average clickthrough rate of display ads is 0.1%.
  7. You are more likely to birth twins than click a banner ad.
  8. About 50% of clicks on mobile ads are accidental.
  9. You are more likely to get into MIT than click a banner ad.
  10. You are more likely to survive a plane crash than click on a banner ad.
